The illustrations can be memorable or unique. The story makes you laugh while you are reading it. You think other students should learn from the story. We are learning something in class and the story reminded us.

How would you recommend a book?

  • Readalikes can be identified. If the person is asking for a book that is similar to another title, you need to match two things: motifs and tone.
  • Keep good records.
  • The key question is to be asked.
  • Abandon snobbery

While we at the Riot take some time off to rest and catch up on our reading, we are re- running some of our favorite posts from the last few months.

We will be back with new stuff on January 3rd. It should be easy to find when you are at dinner with a friend and she asks you for a rec.

Tag each title for its genre and format in which you read it. Ask the person the same question about movies if they can’t remember or aren’t a big reader.

If you find out they last watched a book adaptation, you will get an idea of what kind of story they enjoy. You don’t have to tell them to read Dickens or Stephen King or whoever won the Pulitzer this year. If you still hold onto outdated ideas about science fiction or romance or comic books, you probably haven’t read them in a long time.

How do you recommend a book to someone example?

If someone said they loved The Thirteenth Tale and Wuthering Heights, I’d recommend The Madwoman Upstairs. I would recommend The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry for someone who loved Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore, A Man Called Ove, and The Little Paris Bookshop.

Please comment and let me know what you think is the best feature of a book.

I don’t want to be able to predict the whole plot from the beginning. It’s up to the writer, having chosen a language style that works for that particular narrative, sticking to it and using it well. A cast of characters that I can clearly see in my imagination is what I look for in this one. The author doesn’t go into long detailed descriptions of what each character looks like, but they do give you a few key, well-chosen words that conjure them up as real flesh and blood.

I don’t mean that it has to end with everyone living happily ever after, the mystery solved or the long lost lovers getting back together. I believe that there are many examples of great works of literature with characters that the reader won’t identify. If you get part way through the book, you wonder if the front cover is related to the story, or if it is a romance, then this takes away from the overall effect. You see the quotes from renowned writers, the prize nominations, and the cover design, and you expect a certain something, but what you get is beyond anything you imagined.

What makes a good book and why?

A great book grabs readers on the first page and doesn’t let go until they reach the end of the book. A strong opening is one of the most important elements of book writing. Good characters draw readers in, giving them someone to love, hate, or identify with.

What makes a book good literature?

Great literature is based on new ideas. Great literature makes us think. The ideas underpinning the work put minds on edge.

What are key elements of a book?

The five components are the characters, setting, plot, conflict and resolution. The essential elements keep the story running and allow the action to develop in a logical way that the reader can follow. The individuals in the story are the characters.
