What is author’s purpose 4th grade?

Authors have a specific reason for writing. They can be categorized into 3 categories: to persuade, to inform, and to entertain.

How do you teach 4th grade author’s purpose?

  • You can use mentor texts.
  • Baskets of books can be used with small groups.
  • You can sort a book order.
  • A flip book can be made.
  • There are task cards.
  • Three topics will be introduced for one purpose.
  • Your kids should become authors.
  • It’s time for more practice with text.

I like teaching author’s purpose because it’s a concept that most kids get for the most part, with a little bit of explaining and some hands on practice. For each of the three PIE strategies, I round up some great examples and give them to the class to read over the course of a few days.

I like to put the kids in small groups and give them a basket full of books to sort into categories. The kids love this type of game because it allows them to read multiple books at one time. My students are ready to make their own flip book after sorting through so many examples.

We make a simple one using 9 x 12 construction paper, fold it hot dog style and then use rulers to mark off the 4 inch and 8 inch places so we know where to make the cuts. The three types of author’s purposes are listed on the top of the Flip Book.

For example, fiction passages are usually “Entertain”, a travel brochure is usually “Persuade” and a text book is usually “INFORM”. I always give my kids a clipboard and put them in pairs to tackle the task cards together. My little heart sings when I hear them quietly discussing the author’s purpose and everyone is enjoying the day while learning.

Depending on what the author wanted to say, a topic may be presented in a number of different ways. I like to have the kids make a three sectioned poster explaining how they could write for each of the three purposes with the candy as the topic. I like to have the kids share in small groups and have their classmates identify their purpose after reading the story. I offer a set of Author’s Purpose Posters as a freebie in my TpT store.
