The ultimate goal for international students is the IELTS Band 7. Even at elite Oxbridge and Ivy League institutions, you can get into a university course with a good English score. Listening Band 7 + Reading Band 8 + Writing Band 8 + Speaking Band 7 is an example.

To answer the question of whether or not your English is good enough for eligibility, let’s first look at the British Council’s official descriptions of the different bands. The band score descriptions for the test were published.

Coherence and Cohesion measures the structure of the student’s writing: how well-organized the essay and paragraphs are, whether or not transitions are present, useful and clear, the relevance of the ideas and supporting details, and so on. A test-taker’s ability to use a good range of vocabulary words is measured.

Test-takers should use varied sentence structure as needed, while also using correct, appropriate, and clear grammar forms. The rubrics should give you an idea of how the scores are calculated. The score conversion is difficult based on official info. The official charts of the test makers don’t cover every band, so it’s really confusing.

The unofficial online band score calculator is where it comes from. Although this service is not sponsored by the makers of the test, I have found it reliable. The table is used by many students to predict if they will get a good score on the test.

Let’s say you get 4.5 listening, 6.5 reading, 7 writing, and 5.5 speaking on the IELTS and you want to know how this works. If you improve your score slightly with 7 + 7 + 7.5 + 7.5, you will get a score of 29/4, which will put you in the band 7.5. In the right-hand column, you can see how the English levels in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages are compared to the English levels in the IELTS bands. For Oxford undergrads, the standard-level IELTS scores are 7.0 for the whole test, with a minimum of 6.5 for each section.

If there are minor differences in requirements, applicants should check with the undergraduate programs they are interested in applying to. Grad program requirements can vary a lot at Cambridge, so graduate-level students should check their department-specific requirements if they want to apply to a program.

Check the web page of the program you plan to apply to for the exact English testing requirements. A good score on the International English Language Testing System can be used by the Australian government.

Your scores will tell them if your skills are good enough to make a difference. A minimum of 8 in each category is superior. Extra points will be earned if you are proficient or superior in English.

The skilled worker visa in Canada has different requirements for different types of applicants. According to Queen’s, graduate students need a minimum score of 7.0 on the test. In New Zealand, individual schools make their own decisions on whether or not to accept an IELTS score.

For an example of individual university requirements, the University of Auckland requires at least a 6.0 IELTS score for undergraduate admission (with a minimum of 5.5 for each category) and an overall 6.5 for post-graduate work (with a minimum of 6.0 in each category). Many undergraduate and graduate programs have higher requirements and this is the minimum.

An immigration official may verify that you meet the requirements when processing your application for the work and/or student visa, but you will want to carefully check any program you are interested in at the University of Auckland. Search the New Zealand government’s official immigration website for more information on the requirements for investors, entrepreneurs, parents, and other types of immigration visas. The requirements for work visas are based on how long you will be staying.

In tiers 1 and 2, those requesting permission to stay need to demonstrate a B1 or B2 minimum. Your immigration can be sponsored by schools and other organizations, but it’s up to them to decide on your scores. A good IELTS score can be different depending on the undergrad or graduate program, according to this university. Master’s students need a minimum of 6.0 overall, with no less than 6.0 for all bands, while research degree students need a minimum of 6.0 in each band, though some programs require a 7.0 overall.

The U.S. government is the only one that does not have minimum English requirements for visa applicants. PhD applicants must have a 7.0 average or higher with no less than 6.0 in each category, while Master’s students should have a minimum overall score of 6.5 according to the University of South California. It means that you should look for reliable, high-quality IELTS prep to help you along the way. There are no limits on the number of times you can take the exam with the IELTS.
