Review with students the four reasons for writing and the definition of author’s purpose.

What are types of author’s purposes?

There is a possibility that this is not the case. An author’s main reason for writing is their purpose. The three basic purposes are to inform, persuade, and entertain.

What is the author’s purpose grade 4?

Authors write for a purpose, which means they have a specific reason to write. They can be categorized into 3 categories: to persuade, to inform, and to entertain.

How do you teach 4th grade author’s purpose?

  • There are mentor texts that you can use.
  • Baskets of books are used for small groups.
  • You can do a book order.
  • It is possible to make a flip book.
  • The task cards have tasks on them.
  • Three topics will be introduced for one purpose.
  • Have your children become authors.
  • It’s time for more practice with text.

I like to teach author’s purpose because it is a concept that most kids get for the most part, with a little bit of explaining and some hands on practice. For each of the three PIE strategies, I round up some great examples and give them to the class to read over the course of a few days.

I like to put the kids in small groups and give them a basket full of books to sort into categories. I like this game because it allows the kids to read multiple books at one time. A bit of glue on a three sectioned piece of paper, labeled with PIE, and we are set!

My students are ready to make their own flip book after sorting through a lot of examples. We make a simple one using 9 x 12 construction paper, fold it hot dog style and then use rulers to mark off the 4 inch and 8 inch places so we know where to cut it. The three types of author’s purposes are put on the top of the Flip Book. For example, fiction passages are usually “Entertain”, a travel brochure is usually “Persuade” and a text book is often “INFORM”.

When I give my kids a clipboard, I put them in pairs to tackle the task cards together. My little heart sings when I hear them quietly discussing the author’s purpose, and everyone is enjoying the day while learning. I like to have the kids make a three sectioned poster explaining how they could write for each of the three purposes with the candy as the topic.

I like to have the kids share in small groups and have their classmates identify the purpose after reading the story. I offer a set of author’s purpose posters as a free item in my TpT store.

What is author’s purpose Kids definition?

The reason why the author chose to write a specific piece is described in the author’s purpose. The purpose of a children’s story is to persuade, inform, entertain, and describe. Authors use writing to teach.
