You will find a weakness in your character if you miss one of these. A lack of honesty ruins the trust of those who follow you. I don’t understand what people hope to accomplish by being dishonest.

A person of good character stays with their friends during downtimes. When a leader shows loyalty to a follower in need is one of the most important things to strengthen the leader- follower bond. When he said he would bring Chrysler back from the brink of bankruptcy, Lee Iacocca became a legend. They don’t mind that a leader makes more money or benefits from their work.

People with good character do not mind accountability. The truth is that we need other people to be close to us so that we can progress down the road of success. G.K. Chesterton said that original sin is the only philosophy that has been proven.

A person of good character invites other to speak into their life. Our followers know that we are serious about keeping our house in order and will do a good job in leading the rest of the organization if we allow ourselves to be held accountable.

The ability to make good decisions about what we will and won’t do with our actions is at the core of our character. A person of good character knows how to stay out of trouble. The ability to lead is sabotaged when people don’t exercise self-control.

Adam Grant is a professor at Wharton and he calls it the “Ambivert” mindset because of its ability to discern when to listen, when to respond, and when to take a stand. Giving of one’s self is something that is sacrifice of your time, effort and true consideration.

One way of saying this is that people who exhibit self-control can see the bigger picture, and realize that the current emotion, whether good or bad, is not in the best interest of the individual or group. According to UNC professor Barbara Fredrickson, having a 3:1 positive to negative thought ratio opens our eyes to a wider range of thoughts.
