What an interviewer wants to hear when they ask for a list of weaknesses?

It can be difficult to answer the question, “What is your greatest weakness?”, when you expect to be discussing the skills, talents and capabilities that make you the strongest candidate for the job. When you combine self-awareness with an action plan, you can stand apart from other job applicants.

If you tend to spend too much time on the details of a project, it could be considered a weakness. Sharing that you focus too much on details will show your interviewer that you can help avoid minor mistakes. Employers don’t like the idea of an employee who is focused on the little things, but a candidate who strives for balance can be a great asset.

My greatest weakness is that I sometimes focus too much on the details of a project and spend too much time analyzing the finer points. I try to improve in this area by checking in with myself at regular intervals and giving myself a chance to focus on the bigger picture. That way I can still ensure quality without getting caught up in details that affect my productivity or the team’s ability to meet the deadline. It’s easy to be hesitant about passing something on to another team when you’ve spent a lot of time on it.

Sharing how you are trying to improve by giving yourself a deadline for all revisions and being proactive about changes will help you. A person who accepts all requests seems dedicated and eager, but can also be someone who doesn’t know their limits and ends up needing help or deadline extensions to finish their work. Share how you are working to better self-manage by organizing your tasks and setting realistic expectations with yourself as well as those around you, if you are so eager to take on new projects that you can’t bring yourself to say “no” to. To improve in this area, I use a project management app so I can visualize how much work I have at any given moment, and know whether or not I have the bandwidth to take on more work.

To avoid this, I have begun being more proactive and paying attention to how I am reacting to make sure I am being motivational and helping foster efficiency. When your idea could help the team achieve a goal, you might feel unqualified to speak up. I keep a running document of the impact I have made on my team and at my organization in order to better understand why I should be confident about the skills and unique talents I bring to the table.

Our team adopted my idea for a new financing process which resulted in a 10% decrease in time taken to plan our annual budget. A strong awareness of how you work with others and ways you can adjust your approach to better serve the organization are some of the skills that come from having good teamwork skills. I think diversity in personality makes a business strong, but I tend to quiet my own opinions around louder colleagues. I am better able to collaborate with these personality types so that we both contribute our strengths and skills, by learning more about them, their communication style and motivations.

Explain the success you have found following instructions but also your career potential when finding comfort with ambiguity, if this is the weakness you are presenting. I have created a personal framework for times when I feel overwhelmed or confused by an ambiguous task, including conducting structured research and asking subject matter experts for advice. Remember to explain how you are working to overcome your weaknesses and use this list of weaknesses to help identify your areas for improvement.

I present to senior executives the same way I do junior team members. It can sound boring to say that you are a problem-solver and have good communication skills. In this case, the candidate talks about how her problem-solving skills work and gives examples of her communication skills in front of senior leaders and mediation teams. The candidate left an opening for the interviewer to ask more information after giving a little bit of detail for each strength.

She will be prepared when the interviewer asks, “tell me about a time when you solved a difficult problem” or ” give me an example of a conflict that you mediation.” We had a report due last week and got some numbers back late from our team in Singapore.

I pulled an all-nighter to finish the spreadsheet because I knew that the client needed to receive the report on time. I enjoy the detail work of scheduling, prioritizing, organizing, and following up and know the kinds of issues that come up in a busy marketing department.

I am known for coming up with creative solutions to problems, like when I came up with the fashion trivia contest for Shop Spree.com that led to tons of new sign-ups on the site and a huge newInstagram following. I got out of bed at 1am to get the presentations ready for the meeting.

I can find the story and themes that clients need to know about by taking a lot of data and information. The example shows that others believed the candidate’s writing skills were top-notch.

You could say that your greatest strength is attention to detail. I enjoy being detail-oriented in my work, and it’s something I’ve always done. One of the reasons I applied was that I saw on your job description that this role involves a lot of detail-oriented work.
