To answer the question of whether or not your English is good enough for eligibility, we need to look at the British Council’s official descriptions of the different bands. The band score descriptions for the test as a whole, for Speaking, and for Writing have been published.

There are occasional inaccuracies, mistakes, and misunderstandings with a very good user. The test-takers only understand English in its simplest, most common use.

The test-taker is able to understand a small amount of English, but only with great difficulty. The master category is the one that ties all other speaking skills into. A student who is comfortable and confident in English must answer the interview questions fully and clearly in order to be fluent and coherent.

The category is all about vocabulary and whether or not the student uses a good range of spoken English words. The pronunciation category measures how well students make the vowels and consonants in English. Coherence and Cohesion measure the structure of the student’s writing: how well-organized the essay and paragraphs are, whether or not transitions are present, useful and clear, the relevance of the ideas and supporting details, and so on. This is a test-taker’s ability to use a good range of vocabulary words effectively.

Here, test-takers should use varied sentence structure as needed, and also use correct, appropriate, and clear grammar forms. The rubrics give you an idea of how the bands are calculated.

The score conversion is difficult based on official info from the makers. The official charts of the test makers don’t cover every band.

The unofficial online Band Score Calculator is what it is based on. Although this service is not sponsored by the makers of the test, I have found it reliable.

Let’s say you get 4.5 listening, 6.5 reading, 7 writing, and 5.5 speaking on the IELTS. If you improve your score slightly with 7 + 7 + 7.5 + 7.5, you will get a score of 29/4, which will put you in the band 7.5. You can see how the English levels in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages compare to the IELTS bands in the right-hand column. For Oxford undergrads, the standard-level IELTS scores are 7.0 for the whole test, with a minimum of 6.5 for each section.

A 7.5 on the whole exam, with a 7.0 in each component, is required for all undergrad programs at Oxford. For the minor differences in requirements, applicants should check with the undergraduate programs they are interested in applying to.

Grad program requirements can vary a lot at Cambridge, so graduate-level students should check their department-specific requirements if they want to apply to a program. For the exact English testing requirements for graduate school, check the web page of the program you plan to apply to. A good score on the IELTS can be used by the Australian government. Your scores will tell them if your skills are good enough to make a difference.

Excellent: A minimum of 8.0 in each category. Extra points will be earned if your English is superior. The skilled worker visa in Canada has different requirements for different applicants. You have to use an official chart to convert your scores for immigration.

A minimum whole-test score of 7.0 is needed by graduate students. In New Zealand, individual schools make their own decisions about the IELTS score. For an example of individual university requirements, the University of Auckland requires at least a 6.0 IELTS score for undergraduate admission with a minimum of 5.5 for each category, and an overall 6.5 for post-graduate work with a minimum of 6.0 in each category. Many undergraduate and graduate programs in New Zealand have higher requirements.

An immigration official may verify that you meet the requirements when processing your application for the work and/or student visa, but you will also want to carefully check any program you are interested in at the University of Auckland. Search the New Zealand government’s official immigration website to learn more about the requirements for investors, entrepreneurs, parents, and other types of immigration visas. The requirements for work visas are based on how long you will be staying. Those requesting permission to stay must demonstrate a B1 or B2 minimum in tiers 1 and 2.

Your immigration can be sponsored by schools and other organizations, but it’s up to them to make sure your scores are acceptable. A good IELTS score can be different depending on the undergrad or graduate program, according to this university. Master’s students need a minimum of 6.0 overall, with no less than 5.5 for all bands, and research degree students need a minimum of 6.0 in each band, though some programs require a 7.0 overall.

The U.S. government has no English requirements for visa applicants. If you have an IELTS score that is too low, you may have a number of different options. You could still apply for a different visa class, one with lower results requirements.

In order to get a skilled migrant visa in New Zealand, you need an IELTS of at least 6.5. New Zealand has an essential skills work visa. In North America, Canadian immigration accepts either the CELPIP results or the IELTS results for skilled migration. It’s likely that you’re too low for most immigration visas if you’re below Band 4.
