The examiner can ask one or two questions after the test takers talk about the topic for 1 to 2 minutes.

The expert user has full operational command of the language with complete understanding. A very good user has full operational command of the language with occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriacies.

Good User has operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies, inappropriateness and misunderstandings. Competent User has effective command of the language despite some errors. Modest user with partial command of the language is likely to make many mistakes.

A very limited user understands only general meaning in very familiar situations. No real communication is possible except for the most basic information used in familiar situations and to meet immediate needs. This helps the test taker understand how many correct answers they need.

This chart is only a guide, and the scores can change depending on how difficult the test is. The minimum time limit used to be 90 days before a person was not allowed to take the test again.

The countries with the highest mean band scores for the Academic IELTS test were: Germany 7.4, Greece 7.0, Canada 6.9, Malaysia 6.9, and Spain 6.9. The top ranked universities in the United States usually require a higher IELTS band. The test results are relevant for applying for a student visa. A number of Commonwealth countries use the International English Language Testing System as a proof of competence.
