Competent User has effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies. Modest user has partial command of the language and is likely to make mistakes.

A very limited user understands only general meanings in familiar situations. No real communication is possible except for the most basic information used in familiar situations and to meet immediate needs. This helps the test taker understand how many correct answers they need to get a perfect score. This chart is only a guide because the scores can change depending on how difficult the test is.

There used to be a minimum time limit of 90 days before a person could take the test again. The countries with the highest mean band scores for the Academic IELTS test were: Germany 7.4, Greece 7.0, Canada 6.9, Malaysia 6.9 and Spain 6.9. The top ranked universities in the United States typically require a higher IELTS band. The test results are relevant to applying for a student Visa.

A number of Commonwealth countries use the International English Language Testing System as a proof of competency in English.
