  • Understand Readalikes. If the person asking you for a recommendation is asking for a book that is similar to another title, you need to match two things: motifs and tone.
  • Good records can be kept.
  • The key question should be asked.
  • It’s a good idea to read wider.
  • Abandon snobbery.

It should be easy to access when you are at a dinner party with a friend and she asks you for a rec. You can add tags to each title for its genre and format.

Ask about movies if the person can’t remember or isn’t a big reader. You will get an idea of what kind of story they enjoy if you find out they last watched a book adaptation. You don’t need to tell them to read Dickens, Stephen King, or whoever won the Pulitzer this year. If you still have outdated ideas about science fiction, romance, and comic books, you probably haven’t read them in a while.

How do you write a recommendation for a book?

  • A couple of sentences describe what the book is about.
  • Discuss what you enjoyed the most about the book.
  • Mention the things you disliked about the book.
  • You should round up your review.
  • If you like, you can give the book a rating of 5 or 10.

Plaja offers her top tips for writing a great review of the book you read. Other readers will always be interested in your opinion of the books you’ve read. If you’re stuck on what to say in a review, it can help to imagine you’re talking to someone who’s asking if they should read the book.

If you want to avoid writing in detail about anything that happens from the middle of the book onwards, start with a couple of sentences describing what the book is about. Did you find it hard to care for a main character?

Was the story too frightening for your liking or was it more about the theme you didn’t like? If you like, you can give the book a mark out of five or ten.
