How do you change from first person to third person?

  • Pick a problematic scene from a piece of prose you have recently written in the first person.
  • The piece should be re written from a different point of view.
  • The voice and mood of the story are affected by the change in point of view.

You can observe the impact of writing in the third person point of view by doing this exercise.

Changing the point of view can give you a new perspective, often illuminating new pieces of your fiction, inspiring new ideas, and making for deeper and more introspective fiction. Pick a problematic scene from a piece of prose you have recently written. Look for a piece that includes dialogue and exposition.

There are at least three or four advantages of the new point of view, how the new voice helps develop plot and/or character. List the limitations of the third person point of view for this piece. Is it more difficult to develop your central character with the third person?
