This is a test-taker’s ability to use a good range of vocabulary words effectively. Here, test-takers should use varied sentence structure as needed, while also using correct, appropriate, and clear grammar forms.

Students of mine use the table to predict if they will get a good score on the test. Let’s say that you get 4.5 listening, 6.5 reading, 7 writing, and 5.5 speaking on the IELTS. If you improve that score slightly with 7 + 7 + 7.5 + 7.5, you will get a score of 29/4, which will put you in the band 7.5. Your scores will tell them if your skills are good enough to be considered functional, competent, proficient, or superior. Extra points are earned if your English is proficient or superior. The skilled worker visa on the Canadian government’s website has different requirements for different applicants.

You need to use an official chart to convert your IELTS scores to immigration requirements. According to Queen’s, graduate students need a minimum score of 7.0 on the test.

In New Zealand, individual schools make their own decisions on whether or not to accept an IELTS score. For an example of individual university requirements, the University of Auckland requires at least a 6.0 IELTS score for undergraduate admission (with a minimum of 5.5 for each category) and an overall 6.5 for post-graduate work, with a minimum of 6.0 in each category. Many undergraduate and graduate programs have higher requirements, and this is the minimum.
