Most of my data was inconsistent and did not support my hypotheses when I started several dead-end projects.

I summoned the courage to have the talk with my supervisor and clarify what I needed to do to graduate. I had to learn how to use three new instruments after I was assigned a new project.

I had to run hundreds of samples through my system, but I had hope that I might be able to graduate that semester. I spent a lot of time writing and re-writing paragraphs and jumping back and forth between different chapters because none of the sections felt good enough.

I finished my thesis when I was burning out and spinning into a dark cycle of depression. This may seem obvious, but many graduate students fail to define their overall hypothesis before beginning their thesis.

The more clarity you have about the purpose of your thesis, the more efficient your research will be. The purpose of the first stage of writing is to get as many ideas as possible on paper, without judging, editing or formatting the document. If you allow yourself to collect your ideas without criticism, you will be able to spark your creativity and overcome the fear of imperfection that may be holding you back from starting to write your thesis. The goal at the end of the second phase is to produce a manuscript that has a clear structure and a logical flow of arguments so that you can submit it to your supervisor.

You need to address the feedback from your committee in the final polishing phase. Micro-managers and advisers who want daily updates on your progress are either too busy to mentor you or they are.

Academic advisors who don’t want you to graduate in the first place are simply bad mentors. The role of your advisor is to mentor you so you can be your own boss. It may take several meetings to determine the direction of your thesis if you have disagreements with your advisor or have a dead end project.

If your advisor is difficult to work with, you should continue to plan meetings and find solutions to your problems. The most famous and prolific authors had battles with writer’s block all the time.

Warming up your writing muscles and searching for inspiration are the only cures for writer’s block. It can take several months for a thesis to be written.

If you start your thesis by writing the most difficult chapter, you’ll be like trying to lift a 500-pound weight without training. Eventually, you will give up and label yourself as not good enough to do the exercise. If you put this phrase in your calendar it will either lead to you taking a nap, surfing the web, or staring at a blank computer screen. If you do manage to put some words on paper, you will do it randomly.

Break your chapters down into smaller chunks once you decide on the order in which you will write them. Writing requires creativity, and it is difficult to sustain your focus for several hours in a row until you finish your thesis. Don’t glue yourself to the chair for the entire block of time if you have a 3-4 hour block in your calendar.
