How do you write a 500 word essay in an hour?

  • You have to realize that you are not J.K Rowling.
  • Make sure you have a plan.
  • Take notes efficiently.
  • In 5 minutes, you will turn your notes into an outline.
  • Get your essay flowing by writing an introduction.
  • You have to write your 3 body Paragraphs.

You don’t know where to start, you’re worried about the late-night ahead, and you’re struggling to turn your thoughts into words. Shannon Hale said, “I’m writing a first draft and reminding myself that I’m simply shoveling sand into a box so later I can build castles.” Try to scroll down the page until most of your essay is covered, if you find it hard to stop yourself from constantly rereading.

Go back to your screen and accept that the first draft is going to be bad, and challenge yourself to write that first sentence, then another and then another. If you don’t have an outline first, you could end up scrapping most or all of what you wrote in the first place. If you need to rewrite the question in your own words, write a brief outline of the direction you want your essay to go on, and begin researching!

Unless you are already an expert, it is not a step you can skip, and you end up wasting yourself time in the long run. It is ok to copy and paste notes for the sake of efficiency — but make sure that you completely change the wording and cite the facts correctly in your essay! If you have a good understanding of the evidence and background of your topic, you can move on to creating the organizable flow of your essay! In a way that makes sense, group my notes into three sections for each body paragraph.

Some outlying facts will not fit in a paragraph, but they can be included in the introduction or conclusion, so keep them at the bottom of your doc. The purpose of this is to add context to your introduction and show that you’re using facts and knowledge in your argument.

The main argument is that Imperialism changed both the colonizer and the colonized by creating nationalism, and testing morals. A good topic sentence will make a claim that can be supported with additional facts and examples and clearly relates back to the thesis. This sentence introduces my third point in my third body paragraph of “testing morals”, instead of simply stating a fact. Your topic sentence does not need to be complicated, but it should connect to your overall argument and introduce the point of this individual paragraph.

Don’t forget your key-words and make a judgement about this individual point in reference to your thesis when you relate back to the question at the end of your paragraph. Start with something other than a cliche.

Teachers are tired of hearing those words and they can often be left out. Every writer has to edit their first draft multiple times.

A guide on doing exactly that will be published on The Teen Magazine next month, so make sure you subscribe to our newsletter so you’re notified when it’s written!
