How do you come up with a good essay question?

1 min read

  • You can answer the question. The best way to come up with an idea for an essay is to think about what you would like to see answered.
  • Look at what’s happening.
  • Don’t use your second idea.
  • Unconventional techniques can be used to come up with ideas.

The increasing amount of freedom you have to decide what you want to write about is one of the most exciting parts of your academic career.

You need to think critically about your own knowledge and abilities, and figuring out which question you would do best at answering is a part of the challenge. The essay title will be up to you, but you might have a topic list to choose from. If you are, we hope you don’t need to read this article, you are just trying to do better than your peers. It is about coming up with an essay title that suits your concerns, your interests, and your personal reaction to whatever it is that you are studying.

An off-the-shelf essay title might produce a boring answer because you don’t really care if the Treaty of Versailles was the main cause of the Second World War or where morality originated. You can use this principle to explore any topic that strikes you as weird, annoying, or not quite right.

The truth is that a lot of great academic investigations of various topics are based on someone looking at them and finding that something irritates them, or doesn’t quite fit. The school curriculum makes this easy because we rarely study the typical, run-of-the-mill events, people, books, discoveries and so on. The reign of Henry VIII, which changed life in Britain forever, is more important than the reign of his father, Henry VII, who brought an end to the Wars of the Roses. If you only look at the high points of a particular era, you won’t understand what makes those pieces worthy of studying in the first place.

They will ask why Hamlet is indecisive or why Henry VIII decided to break with Rome, things that naturally strike people as strange. They won’t ask why Shakespeare wrote a play about a prince rather than a commoner, or why Henry VIII chose to take the throne rather than living a happy life as a leading tennis player. Hamlet is very unkind to Ophelia and even more so to his mother, yet he is trying to be a good person, and Horatio still thinks well of him by the end of the play. Whatever it is that you find yourself drifting towards when you are forced to just keep writing, it is probably going to be a good topic to think about further.

Think of an abstract word like happiness, hope, love, purity, curiosity, and see how it might apply to something you are looking at. The images are: pen and paper, chimp, cat, tree, eureka stopwatch, lightbulb.
